Author Instructions for CSM Submissions

Submissions for Review:

Authors are asked to submit their manuscripts to the Editor-in-Chief either as a pdf attachment to an e-mail message or as six complete paper copies.

The maximum length for manuscripts is 30 pages in a reasonable font size (e.g., 12 point) and double-spaced. Submitted manuscripts should be in single column format.

CSM articles do not contain abstracts. Instead, the first paragraph of the article should serve to attract the reader’s attention and to summarize the content of the article.

Do not number sections. Center and boldface all major section headings and left-align and boldface subheadings.
Use punctuation after equations where appropriate. Do not number equations that are not referenced.

Format references in the Magazine’s style (see next page).

Figures and tables should appear on separate pages at the end of the manuscript, and figure and table captions should be printed on a separate page.

The Magazine encourages color illustrations and photographs. Provide copies of photographs with the submission, not the originals.
Author affiliation(s), address(es), and acknowledgments should appear on a separate page.
If you are asked for a revised submission, you may also be sent a copy-edited version of your original manuscript. It is strongly recommended that you make the corrections indicated, in the interests of improving the readability of your article.

After Acceptance:

Once a final acceptance decision is communicated, electronic submission of materials to Ms. Geri Krolin at IEEE Magazines will be required. Instructions for electronic submission can be found on the Web at http://www.ieee.org/magazines/submit.htm. A clean hardcopy of all materials and original photographs must also be sent to Ms. Krolin, along with a short biography (100 words or less) for each author. Both the electronic and paper versions must be received by IEEE Magazines before production can begin.

In addition to materials sent directly to IEEE Magazines, two copies of the complete and final manuscript must also be sent to the Editor-in-Chief.

Before the paper can be published, a signed IEEE Copyright form must be received by the Editor-in-Chief. This form is also available on the Web at http://www.ieee.org/copyright/cfrmlink.htm.

Equations and Mathematical Formulae:

The publishing software used by IEEE Magazines is specialized for magazine-style material and has limited capabilities for automatic handling of mathematical notation. It is therefore important that equations and symbols in authors’ manuscripts appear as they will be printed and that they conform to CSM standards. Specifically, authors should note the following:

All roman variables should be italicized.
Overbars or over-arrows should not be used to denote vectors.
Pre-subscripts and pre-superscripts are discouraged.
The more "basic" the notation used, the less the likelihood of errors or complications during production.

In general, authors should keep in mind that CSM articles are expected to be accessible to a broad control engineering readership, not only to researchers in the authors’ specialty. Manuscripts that are deemed too mathematical in content are returned to the author without review.

Reference Style:

Correction and reformatting of references is one of the most time-consuming tasks in preparing CSM manuscripts for publication and occasionally results in publication delays. Conforming to the following style rules for references will ensure timely production and publication.

References should be listed in order of citation in the text.
Reference citations in the text should be bracketed numbers; e.g., [23], [3]-[5]. For multiple nonsequential citations, separately bracket each number in numerical order; e.g., [3], [5], [7] (not [3,5,7]).
Do not include full first names for authors, only initials (without spaces); initials come first; e.g., I.M. Anauthor.
Article title is in sentence case (only first word is initial capital) and in quotes.
Journal or proceedings name is italicized.
Location is included for conferences.
For journal articles, include vol. and no., lowercase and abbreviated in each case, and set off with commas.
Page numbers appear after the year of publication for conference proceedings and books but before the year of publication for journals.
For technical reports, provide complete address information.
